5 Tips To Rock Your Couples Session

Rock Your Couples Session

by Bessie Young Photography

Valentines day is just around the corner and Summer is coming quicker that we realize. With this means engagements and couples portrait sessions! If you have a portrait session planned and aren't positive on what to expect or how to actually make it go well, do not fret! I have 5 tips for you on how to rock your couples session :)

  • Don't Stress Out : If you are stressed it isn't going to be fun for you. Have fun and enjoy yourself. After all this photo session is for you and your family.
  • Wear what you want to wear : Stop worrying about what others wear to their session. Be yourself. These images are to document this special time in your life. If you want to be fancy, be fancy. If you want to be casual then be causal. Ultimately wear whatever makes you feel confident. Wear something that makes you feel beautiful and something that you are comfortable in.
  • Make a day out of it : After all this is your couples session! You took the time to get ready for it, you did your hair and makeup, and you have on an outfit that you feel amazing in. Take the day and enjoy it. Go out to dinner after the session. If you enjoy the day and make it more of a date where the portrait session is part of your day date, then the pictures are going to come out that much better!
  • Be yourself : Don't act the way you feel you should act during a couples portrait session. Be yourself. You want to be able to relate to the images. The best images are when the true emotions come out.
  • Forget that it is a photoshoot: Ok, so this is easier said than done especially if you don't have your pictures taken very often; however, just remember that this photoshoot is for you and your family. You scheduled it for you. This is to document this special time in your life. Just remember that this time is for you.
  • I hope you enjoyed this. If you have any suggestions on how to rock your couples session, or if you have any questions about it, leave a comment below. Also, if you are looking to schedule a session please contact me using this contact form, or you can always email me. For prices, check out my pricelist here.

Wishing you nothing but love and happiness!

5 Tips to Rock Your Family Portrait Session

5 Tips to Rock Your Family Portrait Session

    by Bessie Young Photography

It is that time of year again! The weather is getting cooler, the trees are changing colors, and you have scheduled your family portrait session in order to get those Christmas cards out :) As your session gets closer and closer you can't help but get a little nervous. For some people it is easy and for others it is absolutely terrifying. Not to worry! I want to make sure that you get the absolute best out of your session and that your images truly reflect you you and your family are. So, here as 5 tips on how to rock your session:

  • Share it all with me: This is hard, but pretty much mandatory. Don't worry when your baby cries, your little one is running wild, or you noticed dirt stains on knees. That is all ok. I can only capture your true self if you feel comfortable with me. Embrace the silly laughter and the cries. Embrace the bright moments and the moments of quiet vulnerability. As always, there is nothing for you to worry about , I will be guiding you throughout the entire shoot :)
  • Be Yourself and don't hold back:  You want to have beautiful images to hang on your wall. Images that show who your family truly is. Images that you can relate to. Don't act the way you feel you should act during a photo session. Just be yourself. The best images are where your truest emotions come out.
  • Wear what you want to wear: Wear something you feel confident in. Something that makes you feel beautiful and something that you are truly comfortable in. Whether that is a ripped up pair of jeans or a sequence skirt, you do you. Don't wear something that you are worried about. There is enough going on with the photo shoot, you don't need to be worried about your outfit as well. Again just be you.
  • Make a day out of it: Have a fun filled day. You aren't going to be your best self after a stress filled day full or running errands. Take it easy. Grab some lunch, go to the movies or the park, or just do something fun as a family. That may even be just sitting home and playing games. Whatever it is, have a fun day. Enjoy the day and enjoy your photo shoot. Let me see you bright and happy :)
  • Forget the fact that this is a "photo shoot": You are doing this for you. I am here to document your family. Forget the photos and focus on enjoying the moment with your family.
  • And for a little extra - DON'T STRESS and just have fun! : Your images will come out truly amazing if you let your worries go and don't stress out about it. Have fun! This time is for you and your family. This time is to document your family and have these images to last for generations to come. Just have fun and be yourself.
  • 5 Tips to Rock Your Family Portrait Session

10 Babies First Month Photo Ideas

10 Babies first month photo ideas

    by Bessie Young Photography

  • Last belly shots before birth Lets face it, pregnancy isn't comfortable and most women do not feel the best during their last months of being pregnant; however, this may be the last time that you are pregnant. I urge you to take if not a lot, just a few photos of this time in your life. Get a shot of that belly before the little one arrives. Trust me, you will want to remember it.
  • The babies first moments or 'Fresh 48' Have someone take pictures within the first hours of your baby arriving into this world. There are photographers that document birthing. You can hire a birth photographer or just put someone on camera duty. Daddy, Grandma, or even nurses would love to be able to take these photos. Just make sure someone is there to snap away to document these moments. Read how to take your own newborn portraits
  • With Mama
  • Pictures last a lifetime. These pictures will be images you cherish FOREVER. Don't let yourself talk yourself out of being in photos with your precious new bundle of joy. Hand over that camera and get just a few shots of you and your newborn. You can also set up a tripod if you would rather. Most women don't feel their best after having a baby, but that shouldn't stop you. A few suggestions to make you feel better in the picture:

    • Lay down on your back and take the picture from above. Mama looking into the camera and crop the image at the chest.
    • Take the picture standing with the image cropped around the chest line.
    • Sit down on a stool with baby in your arms up around your chest. Crop the image right below the chest line
    • Have daddy sit down on a stool holding baby. Stand behind him (with no gap between you and him).  Arm should be on his shoulder and not pressed against your body. Remember to put all your weight on the hip farthest from the camera.
  • With Daddy
  • Men and babies truly melt women. Seeing a grown man fall in love with a tiny newborn is enough to melt a woman's heart. It is beautiful, wonderful, and all around priceless. Get that daddy in front of the camera, even if he doesn't want to.

  • With Siblings10 Babies first month photo ideas - by Bessie Young Photography There is really nothing quite like sibling photos. It may be difficult at times to get your little kiddo to hold still in order to get a picture of him/her with their new baby, but believe me it is worth all the effort you put out to get that shot.
  • Sleeping Many people forget to get the sleeping photos, but this is really one of the best times to get a picture. Whether it be the baby in the crib, or the baby in a basket, get the photos where your baby is sleeping. This is when they are the most peaceful and you can get some of the absolute best shots.
  • Funny faces 10 Babies first month photo ideas - by Bessie Young Photography Is there a face that your little one makes on a regular basis? How about yawning, or tiny little baby smiles? Don't forget to document these little things.
  • The Details
  • The details are what make your baby unique. Ideas for details are toes, lips, noses, hair, eyelashes, fingers, and lets not forget the wrinkles.

  • With special items Did Grandma make a blanket, Grandpa make a wooden toy, or Auntie buy a stuffed animal? These are perfect props to add to a photo.
  • Baby turns one month! Milestones are MUST photos. Get the one month, two month, six month, and year photos. You can always hire a photographer for these milestone shots. Most newborn and / or family photographers offer things called Milestone Packages.

Now go out and get those pictures! Obviously this isn't a full list of images to capture more or less just something to get your creativeness going. For more ideas check out my Pinterest board here: https://www.pinterest.com/bessyoungphoto/newborn-portraits/

10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn

10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn

    by Bessie Young Photography

    1. Safety First This probably goes without saying but make sure that the babies safety is number 1 priority. If you are trying a difficult pose or are using props make sure to have someone there to help you. When using props remember that compositing photos in Photoshop can be your best friend. Remember that this is an option and that alot of amazing images involving props is a composite. I have a more natural and organic style when it comes to newborn portraits so this isn't much of an issue for me. Here are a few simple props that I used that didn't need any compositing:
  • Timing Newborn portraits are best taken during the first 12 days of the baby being born. This way the baby still has the true newborn look. Newborns are most flexible during this time and absolutely love to be swaddled.10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn byBessie Young Photography
  • Pace Yourself The best benefit of taking your own newborns portraits is the fact that you have time! You don't have to worry that you have to get the portraits done at 10 O'clock in morning on Saturday May 5th. You can wait until your little newborn is content and sleeping.  Remember that you just had a baby and you need to take time to rest and recover! Take time and keep everything at a low stress. You can take the portraits over multiple days. You do not have to take all your babies newborn portraits in one sitting :)
  • Lighting is Everything Lighting can make or break a photo. There is no need for fancy studio lighting to get this right. I am a natural light photographer and take all my newborn portraits with natural light coming through a window. Find a nice large window with beautiful natural light. If the light is a bit too harsh you can put a sheer white fabric over the window to diffuse the light a little. You do not want to have the picture to bright and the shadows too harsh. Look for a soft shadow under the babies nose to verify that the lighting is right. Also, don't be afraid to take your session outside! I have seen some absolutely amazing outdoor newborn portraits.
  • Space heaters are a must! Space heaters really allow to keep your baby happy, warm, and content along with keeping your electric bill low. If you do not have a space heater just make sure your room is nice and warm. Bump up that heat!
  • White Noise Ap The white noise ap on my phone is a true blessing. I absolutely love this ap. It helps eliminate any distracting sound and is nice and soothing. The white noise ap I have is for android and it is called the 'White Noise Baby'. It can be found here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tmsoft.whitenoise.baby
  • Get those details The little details are what make your baby unique. Some details to remember are the babies tiny little nose, eyelashes, lips, fingers, toes, hair, ears, top of the head, belly button, fuzzy shoulders, and do not forget those wrinkles :) [envira-gallery id="3620"]
  • Get different perspectives Don't rush to change your set up or re-position your baby. Take a step back and look at different angles or perspectives that you could capture another image. Exhaust all the different angles and perspectives before you change the set up or the position of your baby. These images were all taken without moving the little beauty:
  • Include siblings and yourself Some of the best pictures you can take of your newborn are the ones of siblings and family. It is difficult to get siblings into the image and I know how hard it is to get yourself in front of a camera but these are the pictures that you will cherish for a lifetime. These images are priceless and will be handed down from generation to generation. 10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn By Bessie Young Photography 10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn by Bessie Young Photography
  • Print those beautiful Pictures out! PLEASE for the love of all things print those photos out. You have taken the time to capture these beautiful images so use them! There is absolutely no substitute for the finished product printed up on the wall. Don't hide these images on your computer. Show them! A huge canvas printed in the entry way of your home is priceless. Make your house a home. Print your images, display them on the wall, and surround yourself with your most cherished moments.
  • I hope you enjoyed these tips and tricks. Don't forget to 'subscribe' to my blog to see what I am up to and get these posts sent directly to your inbox :)

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey

    2016 Bessie Young Photography

Starting off a new year brings hope, dreams, and inspiration. With the new year many of us create new years resolutions and plan to stick with them throughout the year; however, by the end of May most people drop their new years resolution goals and forget about the hopes that the new year brought in. We get so involved in the day to day grind that we lose sight of our dreams.

There are certain tools that we can use and/or create to helps us stay on track and not forget our hopes and dreams to help us not lose our inspiration and motivation. They call them vision boards. These boards can also be know as dream boards or inspiration boards. It doesn't matter what you call them, these boards help put your goals into a picture form. Pictures are powerful! They speak to us unlike words ever could.

    What you need:

    • Cork board (you can use a poster board or some sort of canvas.)
    • Old magazines
    • Scissors, glue, and tape
    • Markers ( or paint whichever you prefer)
    • A photo of yourself that you love

Step 1: Make some time to really think about your goals

    • Fitness
    • Home Life
    • Relationships
    • School
    • Sports
    • Activities
    • Community service
    • Work
    • Future Goals

Pick a few different areas in your life. Once you narrow it down, create 1-2 goals in each area. These goals should be measurable whether it be 2 community service events, losing 5 pounds, etc. This way you know when you have achieved that goal.

Step 2: Gather all the materials and make a relaxing creative space. Light some candles, put on some music, make yourself a nice cup of hot coffee, pray over what you want your life to be.

Step 3: Cut out images from your magazines that represent the life you want to live.

    • These images need to be inspiring. Something that you can look at and think "Yes! I want that, I will get that!" Something that keeps you motivated.Impossible Bessie Young Photography

Step 4: Place the photo of yourself in the middle of the board

    • This is completely optional; however, it will help you visualize yourself with your goals.

Step 5: Pin your magazine images onto your board

    • You can pin, tape, or glue. Let your creativity flow!

Step 6: Use markers or paint to write your personal mantra, favorite quotes, or scriptures onto your board.

    Step 7: Find a partner

    • Find someone that you are comfortable sharing your goals with. This will help you stay accountable.

Step 8: Display your board somewhere you will see it everyday.

    • Hang it on your wall, put in on your counter, or place it in your closet. Anywhere that you go at least once throughout the day.

The wonderful thing about vision boards is they are yours. There is no right or wrong way to do it. You can have multiple goals or one big goal. Whatever you want. There is NO wrong way to do it.

This will be the first year that I try to create a vision board. Try along with me and let me know how it goes. I would love to see your progress! Create a board, post it on social media and tag me @bessieyoungphotography. You can also use the hashtag #visionboard2016 or #bessieyoungphotography2016visionboards

I am looking forward to seeing your boards! Happy 2016!
