Sonora Newborn Portraits | Amelia

Sonora Newborn Portraits | Amelia

This Sonora Newborn session was such a gorgeous session. The session was indoors and it turned out so beautifully.

We started off with picking out colors, materials, and set ups. I am obsessed with the fall vibe of these pictures. They are so cute, classic, simple, and cozy. Little Amelia seemed to love it too as I was able to get her to smile multiple times. :)

After little Amelia's portraits we transitioned into capturing images of mom, dad, brother, and baby.

We never truly know the love of a parent, until we become parents ourselves.

One of my favorite parts of taking newborn portraits is being able to take pictures of the mom and dad with their new little one. There is so much love in everyone's eyes, it is indescribable. The way they look at each other, the way they gaze at their new little bundle of joy, all of it is beautiful.

Beckham is 4 years old and he is the cutest! He helped me throughout the entire session. We set up the props together, he checked the back of my camera to make sure the photographs looked ok, and he even tried on headbands for me. He is so adorable and so obsessed with his baby sister.  Little Amelia, you are so loved and so protected. Your brother is going to be the best big brother.

Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero. Marc Brown

Talk about the most gorgeous sweet family! This family made taking these newborn portraits a dream. Each and every one is sweet, kind, understanding, patient, and so much more. I loved this session.

This session was so much fun and so beautiful. Thank you so much for allowing me to be your photographer!

Being a newborn photographer is such a blessing and means so much to me. I am so thankful that I am given this opportunity to be able to photograph this special time in a families life.

Wishing you all a beautiful day,

Outdoor Newborn Portraits | Delaney

When scheduling a newborn session you have to be a little bit flexible when it comes to the time and date. We all know that babies come when they are ready, not when you are ready, and especially not on your 'due date'.

Now, with outdoor sessions you definitely need to be flexible as you want to make sure that the weather is just right in order to work best for the new little one. We definitely don't want them getting cold during their session. With little Delaney, we had to reschedule a couple of times as the weather didn't want to cooperate; however, I am so thankful that we did!

The original plan was to have her newborn portraits taken in Knights Ferry, but ultimately the location changed to Indegeny Reserve and I do have to say that this was an awesome decision.

The portraits came out so amazing!

The session started off with pictures of Delaney's brothers and then all the boys while Delaney was getting comfortable with her new surroundings. Then we were able to get these beautiful pictures when she relaxed and fell asleep.

We ended the session with Mom, Dad, and Delaney after a session filled with a warm autumn breeze, laughter, smiles, and so much goodness.

To Jesse and Haley, thank you so so much for allowing me to be your photographer during this incredibly special time in your families lives!

If you or someone you know is expeciting, I encourage you to truly take a moment and consider scheduling a newborn portrait session. The moment that your new little one is a newborn is a fleeting moment and will be gone in a blink of an eye. These images that come from your session will be around for you to cherish forever.

Wishing you all nothing but beautiful days filled with laughter.

For this child I have prayed and the lord has granted the desires of my heart - 1 Samuel 1:27

Little Addie was born on a Monday with nothing but grace and absolute cuteness.

Her newborn session was taken when she turned only 12 days old on a gorgeous warm fall day. She was an absolute doll during here entire newborn session.  Addie was awake for the majority of the session so curious with what was happening around her. She didn't fuss and we even caught a glimpse of a little smile :)

We started out with a little bit of a lifestyle session inside. I am absolutely thrilled with how these images turned out!

and over all these virtues put on love, for it binds them together in perfect unity - Colossians 3:14

After a little bit of indoors we went outside. There was a gorgeous Pistache tree that was turning red out in front and the weather was warm and beautiful. I absolutely adore outdoor photos! The lighting, the weather, incorporating nature... all of it! I find it to be so incredibly gorgeous:

I absolutely adore this little family. They are beautiful both on the inside and the outside. Thank you so much for allowing me to be your photographer during this special time in your life!

After our outdoor adventure we went back inside to get some posed family portraits and then a few images of just little Addie.

Having a newborn portrait session is important, and having it at your house makes it so special. This session was a little bit of documentary and a little bit of portraiture. Being able to show the love that is within a family and capturing this special time is so important. This beautiful family made it so easy as you can tell that they have so much love for each other, God, and life.

Wishing you nothing but happiness and joy!

Exist In Photographs | Happy Mother's Day

Exist In Photographs | Happy Mother's Day

by Bessie Young Photography

Dear Mama's,

You are beautiful. You are strong. You are kind. You can move mountains. Motherhood is a choice that you make everyday to put everyone else first. To put another individuals  happiness and well being before your own.

Mama's have such a crazy kind of job. You are chefs, housekeepers, coaches, doctors, financial advisers, waitresses, designers, councilors, caregivers, investigators, teachers, and so much more. You are typically also the memory keepers and documenters. You are the one that is always documenting your little ones first steps, your family trips, graduations, birthdays, and more. Just remember that you too need to be documented in photographs for not only you, but for your children and their children. You deserve to be seen, cherished, and noticed. You too need to exist in photographs.

You are truly amazing! Happy Mother's Day!

Prints Matter | Is printing your images outdated?

Prints Matter

by Bessie Young Photography

There is just something magical about printed pictures. I can't stress it enough, get those pictures printed. This way you see them, feel them, and and know that you experienced it. Don't hide them away on your computer. Show them to the world!

Whether we like it or not we live in a digital age. It wasn't very long ago that I was using film and working in a dark room instead of a digital camera and a laptop. The only way you could even see an image was by looking at the negative or printing it out. Remember bringing your film into your local photo store to get your images printed? Most weddings photos and family memories were printed on 4x6 photo paper and placed in a photo album, hung up on your wall, or placed in a beautiful frame.

When digital cameras came around I was upset. I won't lie. I refused, and I mean absolutely refused, to buy a digital camera. My parents were telling me that I needed to let it go and purchase one; however, I was like 'oh heck no, I take real pictures!' Well eventually I broke down and purchased a digital camera and I am sooooo glad I did :) ; however, with digital images I found myself storing my photos away on my computer and never getting them back out. I was taking so many pictures on vacations, holidays, and family get togethers yet I found myself taking my SD card, downloading the images onto the computer, and then never touching them again. Why? I was busy... I would get to it eventually... and it wasn't that big of a deal... but it WAS a big deal and it IS a big deal. My walls in my home were bare and I had nothing to show for all the fun trips, holidays, and loving friends and family that I have in my life. Can you relate?

So I have been dedicated to print my pictures and show them to the world!

Now days, with all the social media and digital cameras, we have pictures on our phones, computers, Facebook, and Instagram pages... so why would we need printed pictures or albums?

There is a big reason I include albums and prints in my wedding packages and albums as an option for my family portraits. Just stop and think for a moment of your favorite photograph growing up.... guaranteed it was a printed one. Think about all the pictures that you have from your childhood. Think about all the family albums that you were able to look through of your grandparents wedding, your parents wedding, and all the fun family trips. These are all physical objects that link you to your past and helps you see your families past. This is why you need printed pictures.

As many of you know, if you follow me on Instagram, I am a huge advocate for printing pictures (hence this blog post). During my initial consultation with clients I encourage them to think about printed images and albums. Think about these things as family heirlooms that you will be able to pass on from generation to generation. Digital pictures are fantastic to have, but prints are where it matters. When you get images on a burned disc you shove them away and forget about them. Every so often you may bring that disc out, but what happens when the disc is corrupt? All your images get lost. What happens when technology makes discs a thing of the past? (remember floppy discs?)  Your images get lost. What happens when that disc gets scratched or cracked? What happens when your computer fails? You get where I am going here right? This is why you need printed pictures.

Prints Matter by Bessie Young Photography

When your grandchildren are going through your belongings don't you want them to be able to look through beautiful old images of your life rather than looking at a disc or USB wondering 'What the heck is that?' The printed images will have become a treasured family heirloom rather than a disc that ends up in the trash can.

Digital files are for now. Prints are for you and the next 3 generations. Prints give your photos life! Hard drives bury images.

Prints are an investment and a wise choice. They are a gift that you will be leaving your children, their children, and their children's children. Prints aren't an outdated choice for the modern digital world. They are a necessity to document your life, hang up on your wall, and provide memories for your family. This is why you need printed pictures.

Maybe you haven't printed your images because aren't positive on what size print you would like or how it would look in your room. There are some pretty cool websites out there that actually have a way to show you what your picture will look like on your wall. Check this one out:

Here is an example one room display that I used, via the website above, with an image from a newborn session:

prints matter by Bessie Young Photography

Then there is always Pinterest! Here is a neat board I found with all sorts of display ideas:

I choose to print my pictures at one of the top premier printing companies. I want nothing but the best for my customers and with that I want their images to last for years and years to come. Many times when you order your prints from say Walmart, Staples, CVS, or online, the color will be off. It may look yellow or a bit orange. This is due to the quality of printers, inks, and papers. Your images will be printed on Kodak Professional Supra Endura VC Digital Paper for Lustre paper. It has an increased color gamut, excellent flesh reproduction, sharpness, and brilliant image quality. The Lustre coating provides protection from fingerprints and slight scratches as well as provides a slightly matte appearance to your prints. These prints are meant to last for over 100 years in a typical home display (meaning the color won't begin to fade).

Hopefully, your take away is that Prints Matter! Leave your opinion in the comments below! I would love to hear what your thoughts and ideas.

Sonora Spring Newborn Portraits | Josephine

Sonora Spring Newborn Portraits | Josephine

Sonora Newborn Portraits

Sonora, California

March 25th, 2016

A new baby is like the beginning of all things -

wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities. (Eda J. Le Shan)

Little Josephine, you shine so bright! Born on Saturday, March 12th, 2016 and weighed in at 7lbs 8ounces. Talk about an absolute cutie!

Sunday was Easter which automatically creates the feeling of Spring. You could smell the flowers blooming, and the sun was shining with a special kind of glow that day. Saturday was the perfect day to take newborn portraits. This Sonora Spring Newborn Portrait session was absolutely amazing. We were able to do a few indoor images and then we headed outside once it warmed up a little bit. What better way to celebrate Spring and your new little one than by heading outside into nature to document the moment?!

Little Josephine was awake the entire session. After all she did just turn 14 days old! There is no doubt that she is definitely a thinker. The entire time she was watching me contemplating what I was doing. Wherever I moved, her eyes followed. During the session there were glimpses of Josephine falling off to sleep, but she didn't want any of that. She wanted to make sure she didn't miss a moment of her session.

Josephine is definitely an outside kind of girl. I believe she liked the indoors as she was able to watch everything I did; however, when we got outside a kind of peace came over her. She enjoyed watching the clouds move and feeling the wind blow over her soft skin. Being in her mama's arms was probably one of her favorite moments.

As she was getting ready to head home, mama placing her in the car seat, her eyes started to slowly close and she slowly drifted off into a deep sleep, exhausted after her big day out.

This session holds a near and dear place in my heart. I was so excited because the new mama was an old high school friend and fellow volleyball player. I was ecstatic when she asked me to take her new little ones newborn pictures. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this special time in your life and trusting me to take little Josephine's newborn portraits!

10 Babies First Month Photo Ideas

10 Babies first month photo ideas

by Bessie Young Photography

  • Last belly shots before birth Lets face it, pregnancy isn't comfortable and most women do not feel the best during their last months of being pregnant; however, this may be the last time that you are pregnant. I urge you to take if not a lot, just a few photos of this time in your life. Get a shot of that belly before the little one arrives. Trust me, you will want to remember it.
  • The babies first moments or 'Fresh 48' Have someone take pictures within the first hours of your baby arriving into this world. There are photographers that document birthing. You can hire a birth photographer or just put someone on camera duty. Daddy, Grandma, or even nurses would love to be able to take these photos. Just make sure someone is there to snap away to document these moments. Read how to take your own newborn portraits
  • With Mama
  • Pictures last a lifetime. These pictures will be images you cherish FOREVER. Don't let yourself talk yourself out of being in photos with your precious new bundle of joy. Hand over that camera and get just a few shots of you and your newborn. You can also set up a tripod if you would rather. Most women don't feel their best after having a baby, but that shouldn't stop you. A few suggestions to make you feel better in the picture:

    • Lay down on your back and take the picture from above. Mama looking into the camera and crop the image at the chest.
    • Take the picture standing with the image cropped around the chest line.
    • Sit down on a stool with baby in your arms up around your chest. Crop the image right below the chest line
    • Have daddy sit down on a stool holding baby. Stand behind him (with no gap between you and him).  Arm should be on his shoulder and not pressed against your body. Remember to put all your weight on the hip farthest from the camera.
  • With Daddy
  • Men and babies truly melt women. Seeing a grown man fall in love with a tiny newborn is enough to melt a woman's heart. It is beautiful, wonderful, and all around priceless. Get that daddy in front of the camera, even if he doesn't want to.

  • With Siblings10 Babies first month photo ideas - by Bessie Young Photography There is really nothing quite like sibling photos. It may be difficult at times to get your little kiddo to hold still in order to get a picture of him/her with their new baby, but believe me it is worth all the effort you put out to get that shot.
  • Sleeping Many people forget to get the sleeping photos, but this is really one of the best times to get a picture. Whether it be the baby in the crib, or the baby in a basket, get the photos where your baby is sleeping. This is when they are the most peaceful and you can get some of the absolute best shots.
  • Funny faces 10 Babies first month photo ideas - by Bessie Young Photography Is there a face that your little one makes on a regular basis? How about yawning, or tiny little baby smiles? Don't forget to document these little things.
  • The Details
  • The details are what make your baby unique. Ideas for details are toes, lips, noses, hair, eyelashes, fingers, and lets not forget the wrinkles.

  • With special items Did Grandma make a blanket, Grandpa make a wooden toy, or Auntie buy a stuffed animal? These are perfect props to add to a photo.
  • Baby turns one month! Milestones are MUST photos. Get the one month, two month, six month, and year photos. You can always hire a photographer for these milestone shots. Most newborn and / or family photographers offer things called Milestone Packages.

Now go out and get those pictures! Obviously this isn't a full list of images to capture more or less just something to get your creativeness going. For more ideas check out my Pinterest board here:

10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn

10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn

    by Bessie Young Photography

    1. Safety First This probably goes without saying but make sure that the babies safety is number 1 priority. If you are trying a difficult pose or are using props make sure to have someone there to help you. When using props remember that compositing photos in Photoshop can be your best friend. Remember that this is an option and that alot of amazing images involving props is a composite. I have a more natural and organic style when it comes to newborn portraits so this isn't much of an issue for me. Here are a few simple props that I used that didn't need any compositing:
  • Timing Newborn portraits are best taken during the first 12 days of the baby being born. This way the baby still has the true newborn look. Newborns are most flexible during this time and absolutely love to be swaddled.10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn byBessie Young Photography
  • Pace Yourself The best benefit of taking your own newborns portraits is the fact that you have time! You don't have to worry that you have to get the portraits done at 10 O'clock in morning on Saturday May 5th. You can wait until your little newborn is content and sleeping.  Remember that you just had a baby and you need to take time to rest and recover! Take time and keep everything at a low stress. You can take the portraits over multiple days. You do not have to take all your babies newborn portraits in one sitting :)
  • Lighting is Everything Lighting can make or break a photo. There is no need for fancy studio lighting to get this right. I am a natural light photographer and take all my newborn portraits with natural light coming through a window. Find a nice large window with beautiful natural light. If the light is a bit too harsh you can put a sheer white fabric over the window to diffuse the light a little. You do not want to have the picture to bright and the shadows too harsh. Look for a soft shadow under the babies nose to verify that the lighting is right. Also, don't be afraid to take your session outside! I have seen some absolutely amazing outdoor newborn portraits.
  • Space heaters are a must! Space heaters really allow to keep your baby happy, warm, and content along with keeping your electric bill low. If you do not have a space heater just make sure your room is nice and warm. Bump up that heat!
  • White Noise Ap The white noise ap on my phone is a true blessing. I absolutely love this ap. It helps eliminate any distracting sound and is nice and soothing. The white noise ap I have is for android and it is called the 'White Noise Baby'. It can be found here:
  • Get those details The little details are what make your baby unique. Some details to remember are the babies tiny little nose, eyelashes, lips, fingers, toes, hair, ears, top of the head, belly button, fuzzy shoulders, and do not forget those wrinkles :) [envira-gallery id="3620"]
  • Get different perspectives Don't rush to change your set up or re-position your baby. Take a step back and look at different angles or perspectives that you could capture another image. Exhaust all the different angles and perspectives before you change the set up or the position of your baby. These images were all taken without moving the little beauty:
  • Include siblings and yourself Some of the best pictures you can take of your newborn are the ones of siblings and family. It is difficult to get siblings into the image and I know how hard it is to get yourself in front of a camera but these are the pictures that you will cherish for a lifetime. These images are priceless and will be handed down from generation to generation. 10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn By Bessie Young Photography 10 Tips for Photographing Your Newborn by Bessie Young Photography
  • Print those beautiful Pictures out! PLEASE for the love of all things print those photos out. You have taken the time to capture these beautiful images so use them! There is absolutely no substitute for the finished product printed up on the wall. Don't hide these images on your computer. Show them! A huge canvas printed in the entry way of your home is priceless. Make your house a home. Print your images, display them on the wall, and surround yourself with your most cherished moments.
  • I hope you enjoyed these tips and tricks. Don't forget to 'subscribe' to my blog to see what I am up to and get these posts sent directly to your inbox :)
